# Storage protocols

Storage is defined by **protocols** — interfaces every backend implements. The `memory`,
`elastic`, and `neo4j` adapters all satisfy these, which is why the entire pipeline runs
unchanged regardless of where data lives. See [](../concepts/architecture.md) for the
